New Carpet vs. Re-stretch: Which is Best for Your Home?

So, you’ve had your carpet flooring for many years, and it has started to buckle or wrinkle. You’re wondering whether it’s time for entirely new carpet, or if you could get a few more years out of it with a re-stretch. If you’re facing this decision, you’re not alone. The choice between installing new carpet and re-stretching the existing carpet is a common conundrum for homeowners.

While there are advantages to both options, there are drawbacks, as well. In this blog post, we’ll explore the pros and cons of each, helping you make an informed decision about the future of your home’s flooring.

What is Carpet Re-stretching?

Carpet re-stretching involves pulling the carpet tighter to remove buckling, wrinkles, loose areas, and tripping hazards restoring its smooth, level surface. These imperfections can occur due to wear and tear over time, improper installation, high humidity levels, and placing heavy furniture on the carpet.

The re-stretching process typically involves:

  • Pulling back the carpet: Starting in the corner of the room, lift the carpet off the tack strip (the thin strips of wood near the walls with small nails sticking out the top). It should peel off relatively easily once you’ve gotten started.
  • Removing the staples: If you’re re-stretching or replacing the padding, as well, you’ll need to remove it next. Use a screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, or a staple remover to gently remove the staples holding the carpet pad down. Ensure you’ve gotten all of them out before rolling up the pad, or it will tear.

You want a straight answer on what it costs to paint your home. Preferably down to the exact dollar per square foot so you can build a clean, accurate budget before hiring someone. It makes total sense...

Let’s be completely honest: the home improvement industry has a major transparency problem. You are likely researching prices because you want to make an educated decision about painting the exterior of your home, but finding an honest number feels nearly impossible...

When you start looking into replacing the windows in your home, it doesn’t take long to realize that the pricing is all over the place. You might get one estimate for $8,000, while another contractor gives you a quote for $25,000+ for the exact same house! We know exactly how frustrating it is...

  • Replacing the tack strips: If the tack strips have seen better days, now’s a good time to replace them. Use a pry bar to remove the old strips, being careful not to accidentally cut yourself on the sharp nails. Cut new tack strips and nail them into place.
  • Replacing the padding: Lay the padding in place and use a knife to cut it to fit snugly against the tack strip. Staple it around the perimeter and seams.
  • Replacing the carpet: Lay the carpet down and use a power stretcher and knee kicker to stretch it into place. Press it onto the tack strips and cut the excess.

Pros and Cons of Carpet Re-stretching

Homeowners opt for re-stretching because it costs much less than new carpet installation, and in most cases, it can be done in only a few hours. In fact, ambitious DIY-ers can even do it themselves. It also extends the life of the existing carpet, reducing waste

However, it’s not a temporary solution — carpet may need to be stretched again in a few years. It’s also not effective for all issues; stains, odors, and significant damage cannot be fixed by re-stretching.

What to Know About Installing New Carpet

Installing new carpet is the best solution for worn-out, stained, or torn carpet that cannot be repaired. With endless materials, colors, and styles available, new carpet creates an updated aesthetic and can increase your home’s resale value.

Pros and Cons of Installing New Carpet

The biggest advantage of installing new carpet is its ability to renew and refresh a space. With modern materials, new carpet often offers better wear resistance. Plus, replacing your old carpet can also improve your home’s air quality by removing allergens that have gotten trapped in the fibers over time.

There are disadvantages to opting for new carpet, as well. It comes with a much higher cost and more intensive installation and should not be installed by amateurs. Furthermore, disposing of the old carpet contributes to landfill waste

Factors to Consider When Choosing Between Re-stretching and New Carpet

As you navigate the decision between re-stretching and new carpet, keep the following considerations in mind:

  • Budget: Do you have the financial resources to opt for new carpet, or is re-stretching more within your budget?
  • Age of carpet: Is your existing carpet still in good condition, or is it nearing the end of its lifespan?
  • Damage level: Does the carpet have stains, odors, or wear that re-stretching can’t fix?
  • Home aesthetics: Is a fresh look high on your list of priorities?
  • Environmental concerns: How important is reducing waste to you?

All things considered, re-stretching is a quick, cost-effective solution for minor issues, while new carpet is suitable for significant wear or aesthetic upgrades.

When to Call a Professional

While enthusiastic homeowners may be able to re-stretch their own carpet, it’s still best to seek professional help. Any DIY project comes with risks, especially if you don’t have the proper tools or experience. Professional carpet specialists ensure the job gets done right the first time and can prevent future issues, saving you time and money in the long run.

Mitch and the Rosewood Team are true pros! Outstanding quality with great communication and attention to their clients’ budget. They recently repaired an exterior door for me that I was certain would need replacing. They did excellent work and saved me several thousand dollars compared to what a full replacement would have cost.
