Comparing Brushing, Spraying, And Rolling When Painting

paint-roller-scaled-1-768x512.jpg

When it comes to painting different materials, knowing how to apply the paint to certain exterior surfaces can make or break the look of your building. Over the years methods for applying paint have evolved and been made easier. But which option for applying paint is still the best? Here are some comparisons between the different application methods of brushing, spraying, and rolling when applying them to different materials.

Preparation Time

If you are needing to paint a surface in a short amount of time, there may be a better painting method for you. Prep time for anything can take up a lot of your time and prevent you from completing the process in the quality you want.

Spray painting means setting up the spray equipment, pouring paint into reservoirs, connecting hoses and cords correctly and more can result in a lot of prep time. Rolling or bushing may be a better option for those who need to complete a process quickly.

Application Time

Saving prep time can be lost if you are not skilled at rolling or brushing in an effective manner. Rolling and brushing on paint is methodical and if done correctly, should not show brush strokes or lines where you overlapped the paint. This can take more time when you are paying attention to detail.

Spraying takes less time to apply than other traditional methods and can be more effective in the long run for big buildings or areas. Spray painting in your home may not be the best method because of fumes during application, and rolling is a better method for interior walls.

Brushing

The long-standing method still works for many homes or buildings that need new paint. Brushing can be a good method for small touch-ups or walls with small corners. When you decide to use the brushing method, you need to ensure you have plenty of time to complete the project.

Inviting a contractor into your home can feel like a gamble. You are likely wondering if you are about to deal with a high-pressure pitch, a vague lowball quote that doubles later, or a contractor who seems more interested in closing the sale than understanding your project.

Spraying

Short-term projects are best completed with spray paint. This gives you a smooth coating and does not come with streaks or lines. Spraying can be used for many different materials and designs without needing touch ups to get into small corners or crevices.

When using a spray painting machine, you need a little bit of skill to know how much pressure is too much and what will be needed to cover stains or passed paint. High-volume with low-pressure guns are the best for homeowners.

Rolling

This method is best for large areas whether interior or exterior. Rolling is known for streaks when not applied with precision and keen attention to detail. Many of these rolling jobs require multiple coats of paint in order to cover streaks and lines.

While the rolling method can cause streaks, it wastes less paint than other methods. Rolling also is best used for filthy walls and puts on thick paint to cover stains.

Using A Combo

If you are unable to determine what painting method will work best for your, the best option may be to combine all three methods. Brushing small areas before rolling can help coat the entire surface well. Different materials like brick may benefit from spray painting and brushing to get into those crevices.

Painting homes can come with multiple methods used in just one room. Baseboards can be painted with a brush, interior walls rolled, and cabinets sprayed.

Mitch and the Rosewood Team are true pros! Outstanding quality with great communication and attention to their clients’ budget. They recently repaired an exterior door for me that I was certain would need replacing. They did excellent work and saved me several thousand dollars compared to what a full replacement would have cost.
